The pandemic has been challenging for everyone, particularly women. Dragonfly was keen to find out just how it had affected womens’ lives and in September 2021 ran an independent Dragonfly CBD poll surveying over 1000 British people.
Sadly, we found that health inequalities between genders continues to rise. Women are much more likely than men to feel stressed and suffer from anxiety, (30% of women vs just 18% of men); most women said they were getting a lot less sleep than before the pandemic began (24% of women vs. 16% of men). And more than half of women noted the pressure to be perfect for example at work, as a partner or parent. As a result, many women are coming out of the pandemic feeling like they’ve simply ‘lost’ themselves.

“Women all over the world have been through a huge amount of emotional and physical struggle during the pandemic. It’s really taken its toll on working Mums, stay-at-home mothers, grandmothers, sisters… as they quickly adjusted to survive a new norm. I don’t know anyone who wasn’t affected by it.
I’ve always been a really proactive doer, and like to travel a lot, so I found long periods of isolation tough on my mental health. But what really helped pull me through was my family and the opportunity to reflect back on myself and reconsider my priorities.

“Sadly, stress and anxiety affect more women than men. Many factors can contribute to our level of stress; finances, work pressures, children and the desire to look good and keep healthy, to name a few.
To combat anxiety there are simple steps every woman can take to manage their daily stress levels. Firstly, look after your body and brain by eating your five-a-day of fruit and vegetables. Regularly eat protein and introduce some fish into your diet twice a week, particularly oily fish like salmon or mackerel. Boost your diet with a multivitamin that will ensure you get all the vitamins and minerals you need. Relax the brain with 10 to 15 minutes of quiet meditation or yoga each day, particularly in the evening to help switch off and sleep. And finally, try to get at least 7 – 8 hours of sleep a night. It has a dramatic effect on your emotional wellbeing, hormonal balance and even the food choices we make.”
